Justice Minister Rodrigo Lara-Bonilla Addresses Congress on the Sins of Political Corruption

Chamber of Representatives President: Good morning.

This is to inform you that we have a quorum and may now begin our session. The Minister of Justice, Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, is present in this Chamber to address this Honorable Congress.

Please, Mr. Minister, you have the floor.

Justice Minister Bonilla: Thank you very much.

Much has been said about the issue of drug money, "hot money", in our national politics.

I have been accused of receiving campaign contributions from drug traffickers who have bought influence in this Congress.

In this respect, I admit responsibility.

In my eyes, the sin of turning a blind eye is as serious as the sin of outright corruption.

We are a country of the blind, and in our blindness, we have sold our country to the highest bidder.

It is time for us to open our eyes and see the light.

Congressman Escobar, you stated that your large fortune derives from a taxicab company. This photograph contradicts your statement.

For this reason, I demand your resignation.

You are not welcome in this chamber.

You do not belong here.

[What the narcos are interested in is not only the fall of a Justice Minister but to impede the government's strategy to combat their interests. Their two weapons: money or lead.]

Les informo que ya hay quórum para iniciar la sesión. Se encuentra presente en este recinto el Sr. ministro de Justicia, Rodrigo Lara Bonilla, para dirigirse a este honorable Congreso.

Por favor, Sr. ministro, tiene la palabra.

Ministro della Giustizia Rodrigo Lara Bonilla: Muchas gracias. Mucho se ha hablado del tema de los dineros provenientes del narcotráfico, de “dineros calientes”, en nuestra política nacional.

Yo mismo he sido acusado de recibir dineros a campaña de narcotraficantes que han comprado influencia en este Congreso.

Ante esto, admito ser responsable.

A mis ojos, el pecado de hacerse el ciego es tan grave como el pecado de la corrupción descarada.

Somos un país de ciegos, y en nuestra ceguera, hemos vendido nuestro país al mejor postor.

Es hora de que abramos los ojos y veamos la luz.

Congresista Escobar, usted ha declarado que su gran fortuna proviene de una compañía de taxis. Esta fotografía claramente contradice su declaración.

Por esto mismo, exijo su renuncia.

No es bienvenido en esta cámara.

[Los que les interesa a los narcos no es solamente la caída de un ministro de Justicia, sino impedir la estrategia del gobierno para combatir sus intereses. Sus dos armas: plata o plomo.]
