American Rhetoric: Movie Speech

"Chariots of Fire" (1981)

Eric Liddell Preaches at the Church of Scotland

Audio mp3 delivered by Ian Charleson

Liddell: My text this afternoon is taken from Isaiah, Chapter 40:1

Behold, the nations are as a drop in the bucket, and are counted as the small dust in the balance. [Verse 15]

All nations before Him are as nothing; they are counted to Him less than nothing, and vanity. [Verse 17]

He bringeth the princes to nothing. He maketh the judges of the earth as a vanity. [Verse 23]

Hast thou not known? Hast thou not heard that the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth, fainteth not; neither is weary. [Verse 28]

And to them that have no strength, He increaseth might. [Verse 29]2

But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings, as eagles. They shall run, and not be weary. They shall walk, and not faint. [Verse 31]

1 Quoted more and less directly from the King James Version of the Bible, beginning with verse 15 and followed by verses 17, 23, 28, 29, 31 in succession.

2 The words "strength" and "might' have been switched in this version of the reading.
